Networks Have to Work ... or Education Doesn't

Nashville, TN - May 3, 2005 - Education Networks of America (ENA), a leading education Managed Internet Service Provider (MISP), today released Networks Have to Work…or Education Doesn’t: Managed Internet Network Services as the New Foundation for Education Delivery, a white paper, created to address the critical need for and value of a state and district-wide K-12 managed Internet network to enable and support accountability and learner-centered education.

State and district wide networks are becoming the new foundation for education delivery. Without a secure, reliable, equitable, and state-of-the-art network in place, it is virtually impossible to consistently deploy national, state, and district K-12 initiatives. Today, many states and districts have pieces of a foundation, such as connectivity, content, and communication tools, but are hindered by lack of funding, technical complexities, and the inability to reach all students and educators with equal access to technology. A Managed Internet Service Provider can eliminate these obstacles by maximizing funding sources such as E-Rate, leveraging existing investments in technology, and providing a cohesive platform for equity and future growth to support educational outcomes.

Networks Have to Work…or Education Doesn’t defines the effective practices, cost efficiencies, and value-added turnkey services provided by a model MISP. As the single point of contact and accountability, the MISP assists in the E-Rate process, utilizes economies of scale to deliver cost-effective and reliable network solutions, specializes in end-to-end Internet connectivity, and creates innovative tools, all designed to serve the education community rather than just connecting it. The MISP offers users flexibility and best of breed technology for the life of the contract while reducing costs, especially in delivering services to high cost areas such as rural regions.

“The MISP is the state and district’s partner in education technology,” explained Lillian Kellogg , VP of ENA. “Accountability is a top priority in education. The reality is, implementing accountability measures and mandates are not possible without technology and to use technology effectively, you need a robust, reliable, and comprehensive network. There are several integrated and fundamental building blocks to improve and sustain academic performance. Working with the right MISP, one that truly understands education, ensures the proper foundation for the building blocks is established so the vision of increased educational outcomes is realized.”

The white paper looks at best practices and successes with the ConnecTEN network in Tennessee as a model example of a MISP (ENA) that capitalized on technology to transform educational delivery.
