Tennessee enrolls approximately 998,000 students, is divided into 147 districts, and serves both urban and rural populations. Academically, Tennessee’s students perform below the national average, a condition compounded by significant gaps correlated to income and race. As a department, LEAD is dedicated to dramatically improving student achievement and committed to the belief that children from all backgrounds can succeed when given the opportunities they deserve.
